The son of a human female slave, Varak grew up among the orcs of the Severed Hand tribe. He went along on tribal raids almost as soon as he could walk and proved to be skilled as a scout and a fearless warrior in battle. By the age of 16, he was a veteran warrior and in recognition of his greater self-control, underwent the Sacred Tattoo ceremony.
But his mind kept going to the human villages he had seen. Was the something for him among his mother’s race? And so, Varak left the Severed Hands one night, in search of adventure.
Varak wandered for a while, scratching out a living in the streets of Bop. During that time, Varak came to realize that civilization is merely another form of jungle. And just as shelter can be found in a jungle, so Varak found shelter in a tavern called The Overmilked Calf, owned by a man named Jamlain.
Varak stayed at the Overmilked Calf for the better part of a year, doing odd jobs and trying to be helpful. Jamlain did his best to help Varak fit in, and eventually heard of an employment opportunity that would make good use of Varak’s skills. And so it was that Varak set forth, bearing a flask of Jamlain’s finest ale, only to discover that he was working for a bunch of elves.
